Why is it important for parents to read with their children?
Two children’s research organisations recently reported that only a third of primary school parents now read to their children on a regular basis compared with 43 percent only two years ago. Even more worryingly nearly a quarter, 23 percent, never read to them at all. Both parents have an important role to play. The National LiteracyTrust said ‘research evidence shows that your involvement in your child’s reading and learning is more important than anything else in helping them to fulfil their potential. Children who are familiar with books and stories before they start school are better prepared to cope with the demands of formal literacy teaching. Reading is fun and helps build relationships. The impact lasts a life time, readers are more confident and have greater job opportunities.’
Why should parents use puppets to illustrate the storyline?
A puppet can make a story come alive and be incredible fun. It can also play an important role in your child’s development.
‘Using puppets enhances a storyline, helps children to increase their attention span, and improves their active listening skills.’ Connie Champline – Author of ‘Story telling with puppets’.
